Frequently Asked Questions about Qian Hu Extract
What is Qian Hu / Chinese hogfennel (Peucedanum praeruptorum) root extract?
Qian Hu is the Chinese name for the dried root of Peucedanum praeruptorum, a plant of the carrot family (Apiaceae); in pharmacy it is Radix Peucedani, and the genus is sometimes called "hogfennel." This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried root, taken by the drop. A few notes matter: the plant contains natural coumarins (including furanocoumarins), which can increase sensitivity to sunlight and may interact with some medications, so please read the safety notes below, and consult your practitioner if pregnant or on medication.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Peucedanum praeruptorum root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Qian Hu the same as your Hog Fennel product?
No - and this is an easy mix-up. Both belong to the genus Peucedanum, and both are sometimes called "hogfennel," but they are different species. Qian Hu is Peucedanum praeruptorum (the Chinese cough herb), which we carry here. Our separate Hog Fennel product is Peucedanum palustre (marsh hog's fennel), a different plant. Because the common name "hogfennel" is shared across the genus, we label this one clearly as Peucedanum praeruptorum so there is no confusion.
How do I use Qian Hu / Chinese hogfennel liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because it contains furanocoumarins, it is wise to limit strong sun or tanning while using it. Consult your practitioner before use if you are pregnant or take any medication. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store cool and dry, away from light, and shake before use.
Is Qian Hu right for everyone? Safety information.
