Frequently Asked Questions about Sage Extract
What is sage leaf extract used for?
Sage leaf extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried leaf of Salvia officinalis, an aromatic perennial subshrub in the Lamiaceae (mint) family native to the northern Mediterranean coast. The dried leaf contains an essential oil complex characterized by the terpene ketones alpha-thujone and beta-thujone, alongside camphor, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), and borneol. The leaf also contains the distinctive phenolic diterpenes carnosic acid and carnosol; rosmarinic acid; hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic); methoxylated flavones (hispidulin, cirsimaritin, luteolin); and triterpenoids including ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. Salvia officinalis is among the oldest documented medicinal plants in the European tradition; the genus name Salvia derives from the Latin salvere (to be in good health), used by the Roman encyclopedist Pliny the Elder, and the plant was listed in the earliest European pharmacopoeias and the US National Formulary. As a dietary supplement, sage leaf extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between sage leaf glycerite and tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers Sage Leaf in two liquid formats. The Sage Leaf Glycerite is an alcohol-free extract using 60% vegetable glycerin and 40% purified water as solvents, suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The Sage Leaf Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction. Both formats are prepared from the same dried Salvia officinalis leaf material using cold maceration at a 1:3 plant-to-solvent ratio. Both are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing for each batch.
What is the botanical background of Salvia officinalis (sage)?
Salvia officinalis is an aromatic perennial subshrub of the family Lamiaceae (mint family), native to the northern Mediterranean coast and cultivated worldwide as a culinary and garden herb. The genus name Salvia is Latin, derived from salvere (to be in good health), used by the Roman encyclopedist Pliny the Elder; Salvia is among the most species-rich genera in the plant kingdom, with approximately 900 described species worldwide. The species epithet officinalis (Latin: of the apothecary's shop) designates a plant of established medicinal use - a term applied similarly to rosemary, valerian, lavender, and other herbs with long histories of recognized use. Salvia officinalis belongs to the tribe Mentheae within Lamiaceae, the same family as rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), lavender, thyme, oregano, basil, and lemon balm. The plant grows to 30-90 cm in height, with distinctive woolly-pubescent (densely hairy), grey-green leaves and characteristic purple-blue flower spikes. Common names include garden sage, common sage, culinary sage, and Dalmatian sage.
How do I use sage leaf liquid extract?
Adults: take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, three times daily. Shake well before each use. Refrigerate after opening. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Are there any precautions for using sage leaf extract?
Salvia officinalis leaf contains alpha-thujone and beta-thujone, terpene ketones that can affect the nervous system at amounts substantially exceeding the suggested serving size; do not exceed the recommended dose under any circumstances. Pregnant individuals should avoid use: sage leaf has documented uterotonic activity and is not considered safe during pregnancy. Individuals with a history of seizures or epilepsy should consult a healthcare professional before use, as thujone may affect seizure threshold. Individuals taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications should consult a healthcare professional before use, as rosmarinic acid in sage leaf may affect platelet function. Individuals taking medications for blood glucose management should consult a healthcare professional before use. Nursing individuals should seek professional guidance before use. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
