The plant is a vigorous woody climber with prickly stems, large alternate leaves with prominent parallel veining and tendrils for support, and produces small umbels of greenish flowers on dioecious plants - male and female flowers on separate individuals - followed by clusters of small fleshy berries. The genus name Smilax is the classical Greek name for a plant, possibly derived from smilakine, referring to the scratching or rough quality of the prickly stems. The species epithet medica derives from the Latin medicus, meaning medicinal, reflecting the plant's historical place in herbal medicine.
