Frequently Asked Questions about Starwort Extract
What is Starwort / He Shi (Fructus Carpesii seu Dauci) fruit extract?
This is a liquid extract of the dried fruit known in Chinese tradition as He Shi. Its pharmacopeial name is Fructus Carpesii seu Dauci, where "seu" is Latin for "or" - meaning the fruit comes from one of two plants: Carpesium abrotanoides (family Asteraceae), the classical northern He Shi, or wild carrot, Daucus carota (family Apiaceae), the southern substitute. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Our label also uses the common name "starwort," although that English word more usually refers to unrelated plants. One point matters most: this fruit is recorded as mildly toxic, is used only for short courses, and is strictly not for use in pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same He Shi fruit; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The fruit inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Which plant is this - Carpesium or wild carrot? And what is "starwort"?
The pharmacopeial name He Shi (Fructus Carpesii seu Dauci) covers two accepted botanical sources: Carpesium abrotanoides (Asteraceae), the classical "northern" He Shi, and wild carrot Daucus carota (Apiaceae), the "southern" substitute whose fruit is the same as wild carrot seed. Both are used the same way and carry the same cautions. The English name "starwort" on our label is a trade name; strictly, "starwort" usually refers to unrelated plants (such as Stellaria or Aster), so do not confuse this product with those. If you need to know the exact botanical source of a given batch, please contact us.
How do I use Starwort / He Shi liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Starwort / He Shi right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Mild toxicity: He Shi fruit is recorded in the Chinese pharmacopoeia as mildly toxic, so use it only for short courses, do NOT exceed the suggested serving, and use it ideally under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Possible effects at higher amounts include dizziness, ringing in the ears, and abdominal discomfort. Pregnancy and nursing: this fruit is strictly contraindicated in pregnancy - it has shown uterus-stimulating and developmental effects in animal studies - so do NOT use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Children: use only under professional supervision. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children.
