Strong Bones Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts: the ancient jointed horsetail of damp meadows, the pink pasture flower of red clover and the dark woodland root of black cohosh. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for short courses - several of its ingredients carry serious cautions, so please read the safety information below before use.

  • Horsetail, herb - Equisetum arvense herb (Equisetaceae)
  • Red clover, flower - Trifolium pratense flower (Fabaceae)
  • Black cohosh, root - Actaea racemosa root (syn. Cimicifuga racemosa; Ranunculaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (horsetail from Bulgaria, red clover and black cohosh from the USA). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Horsetail - a leafless, jointed green plant of damp meadows and ditches, a living relative of the giant horsetails of the coal-forming forests; its rough stems were once used to scour pots. The sterile summer stems are used.
  • Red clover - the round pink-purple blossoms of the common pasture clover, naturalized across North America; the flower head is used. It is rich in isoflavones, which is why the safety note mentions hormone-sensitive conditions.
  • Black cohosh - a tall plant of the buttercup family from the hardwood forests of eastern North America, with slender spikes of white flowers; the dark, knotted root is used.

Why a tincture

The three dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, earthy taste with the sweetness of red clover, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use it in short courses, and do not take it continuously for more than a few weeks without talking to your practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as Strong Bones Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains black cohosh and horsetail, and two of its herbs have hormone-related cautions. Please read before use.

  • Liver: cases of liver injury have been reported with black cohosh products, some of them serious. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual tiredness or abdominal pain. Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: do not use if you have or have had breast, uterine or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or fibroids, or take hormone therapy. Red clover has estrogen-like activity, and black cohosh is not recommended in these conditions.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Kidneys, diuretics and lithium: horsetail has a diuretic effect. Do not use if you have kidney disease, and consult your doctor if you take diuretics, lithium or medicines that affect potassium.
  • Duration and vitamin B1: horsetail contains thiaminase, which can deplete vitamin B1 with prolonged use - use in short courses only, and do not take continuously for more than a few weeks.
  • Blood thinners and surgery: red clover may add to the effect of warfarin and other blood thinners - consult your doctor, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Aspirin: avoid black cohosh if you are sensitive to aspirin or salicylates.
  • Nicotine: horsetail contains traces of nicotine - avoid if you are allergic to nicotine.
  • See a doctor: this blend is not a replacement for any medical evaluation or prescribed treatment.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Strong Bones Tincture?
Strong Bones is a three-herb liquid blend: horsetail herb (Equisetum arvense), red clover flower (Trifolium pratense) and black cohosh root (Actaea racemosa, also listed as Cimicifuga racemosa), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Horsetail is the ancient jointed plant of damp meadows, red clover the common pasture flower, and black cohosh a woodland root of eastern North America; each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is for short courses and is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, earthy taste with the sweetness of red clover. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is horsetail safe to take every day? Is this the red clover flower or the leaf?
Horsetail is traditionally used in short courses rather than continuously: the raw herb contains thiaminase, an enzyme that breaks down vitamin B1, and it has a diuretic effect, so this blend should not be taken daily for long periods, and people with kidney disease should not use it at all. The red clover here is the flower head, not the leaf. Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is not related to blue cohosh, a different plant with a different safety profile that is not in this blend. All three herbs are also available as single extracts.

Use it in short courses, and do not take it continuously for more than a few weeks without talking to your practitioner.
