Frequently Asked Questions about Sweet Rice Extract
What is Sweet Rice / Nuo Dao Gen (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa) root extract?
Sweet Rice is a liquid extract of the dried root of glutinous (sticky) rice, Oryza sativa var. glutinosa, a plant of the Poaceae (grass) family. In traditional Chinese medicine the root and rhizome are known as Nuo Dao Gen (or Nuo Dao Gen Xu; Radix Oryzae Glutinosae). It is also called sticky rice root, waxy rice root or pearl rice root. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Note that this is the ROOT of the rice plant, not the familiar grain (which is Nuo Mi), and it is a different plant from Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa), which happens to share the species word "glutinosa" but belongs to a completely different family. Despite the name "glutinous," rice is gluten free - the word refers to the sticky texture, not to gluten.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same glutinous rice root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The root inside is identical.
Is Sweet Rice root the same as sticky rice grain or Rehmannia?
No on both counts, though the names overlap. Sweet Rice here is the ROOT (Nuo Dao Gen) of the glutinous rice plant, whereas the sticky rice you eat is the GRAIN of the same plant (called Nuo Mi in Chinese) - a different part used differently. And although our plant, Oryza sativa var. glutinosa, shares the species word "glutinosa" with Rehmannia glutinosa (Di Huang, a well-known Chinese tonic root), the two are entirely different plants from different botanical families - the shared word is just a coincidence meaning "sticky/glutinous." We label ours clearly as glutinous rice root (Nuo Dao Gen) so it is not confused with either the grain or with Rehmannia. Also note that "glutinous" does not mean it contains gluten; rice is naturally gluten free.
How do I use Sweet Rice root liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite has a naturally mild, slightly sweet carrier that suits those who prefer no alcohol. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Sweet Rice root right for everyone? Safety information.
Glutinous rice root is a gentle, mild herb with a long history of food-adjacent use and a favorable safety profile, but a few sensible cautions still apply. Pregnancy and nursing: as a general precaution do not use concentrated herbal extracts during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use unless advised otherwise by a practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, since herb-drug interactions can occur even with mild herbs. Do not give it to infants or young children without professional advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
