Thyroid Support Alcohol-Free Drops - Kelp, Horsetail and Stinging Nettle Herbal Blend

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts. Thyroid Support is the name of the blend; it is a traditional herbal product, not a capsule and not a standardized iodine product. The kelp in it naturally contains iodine, and the amount is not standardized - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Kelp, whole plant - Ascophyllum nodosum (knotted wrack), a brown seaweed of the North Atlantic (Fucaceae); naturally contains iodine
  • Horsetail herb - Equisetum arvense herb (Equisetaceae)
  • Stinging nettle leaf - Urtica dioica leaf (Urticaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals; seaweed from cold North Atlantic waters. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) - the knotted wrack, a tough olive-brown seaweed that grows on rocky North Atlantic shores; like all brown seaweeds it takes up iodine and minerals from seawater, in amounts that vary with season and place.
  • Horsetail herb - the segmented, brush-like stems of Equisetum arvense, one of the oldest plant lineages on Earth, once used to scour pots because of its gritty silica.
  • Stinging nettle leaf - the young leaf of the common nettle, a traditional spring green of Europe and North America.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the salty note of the kelp.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and use it as a course with breaks rather than continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Thyroid Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains kelp, a seaweed that naturally contains iodine in an amount that varies and is not standardized. Please read before use.

  • Iodine and the thyroid: too much iodine can disturb thyroid function in either direction. Do not use this product if you have a thyroid condition, an autoimmune thyroid disorder, or take thyroid medication, unless your doctor is supervising you. Do not exceed the label serving.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use. Excess iodine can be harmful, and horsetail is not recommended in pregnancy.
  • Duration: use as a course with breaks, not continuously. Horsetail contains thiaminase, an enzyme that can deplete vitamin B1 with prolonged daily use.
  • Kidneys and heart (horsetail): do not use if you have kidney disease or fluid retention caused by heart or kidney problems. Horsetail and nettle have a diuretic effect and may add to diuretics or lithium.
  • Blood thinners: kelp and nettle contain vitamin K. Consult your practitioner if you take warfarin or other anticoagulants.
  • Blood sugar: nettle may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Seaweed and heavy metals: seaweeds can take up arsenic and other metals from seawater, which is why sourcing matters. Keep to the label serving.
  • Allergies: avoid if you are allergic to nettles or to seaweed.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Not for children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Thyroid Support Alcohol-Free Drops?
Thyroid Support is a three-herb liquid blend: kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum, the knotted wrack seaweed of the North Atlantic), horsetail herb (Equisetum arvense) and stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule and not a standardized iodine product: kelp naturally contains iodine, and the amount varies from batch to batch. Each of the three herbs is also sold on its own; the blend combines them in equal parts. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below before use - it is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the salty note of the kelp, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What is each herb in the blend?
Kelp here is Ascophyllum nodosum, the knotted wrack - a brown seaweed of the cold North Atlantic shores that naturally takes up iodine and minerals from seawater; the iodine content is not standardized. Horsetail is the segmented, brush-like herb of Equisetum arvense, an ancient plant rich in silica that was once used to scour pots. Stinging nettle leaf is the young leaf of Urtica dioica, a common spring green of Europe and North America. All three are sold individually on our site if you prefer a single herb.
