Frequently Asked Questions about Tian San Qi Extract
What is Tian San Qi / Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) root extract?
Tian San Qi is a liquid extract of the dried root of Panax notoginseng, a member of the ginseng family (Araliaceae) known in traditional Chinese herbalism as San Qi or Tian Qi and in English as notoginseng or "three-seven root." You may also see it labeled with the older pharmacopeia phrase "Radix Pseudoginseng"; the accepted botanical name is Panax notoginseng. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including ginsenosides and notoginsenosides, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced (notoginseng is cultivated) and each batch is gluten free. Notoginseng is a distinct species from the classic ginsengs. Please read the important safety notes below, especially regarding blood-thinning medication, surgery and pregnancy.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Panax notoginseng root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is notoginseng the same as ginseng, and are San Qi and Tian San Qi the same herb?
Notoginseng is in the ginseng family but it is its own species, Panax notoginseng, and it is used differently from the classic ginsengs. It is not the same as Asian/Red Ginseng (Panax ginseng) or American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius, which we also sell as Xi Yang Shen). As for the names: Tian San Qi, San Qi, Tian Qi and notoginseng are all the same plant, Panax notoginseng - "San Qi" means "three-seven," a traditional name for this root. So if you have seen our San Qi / Notoginseng listing, it is the same herb as this one. We label each ginseng-family product by botanical name so there is no confusion between notoginseng, Asian ginseng, American ginseng and the related Araliaceae herbs (Devil's Club, Wu Jia Pi).
How do I use Tian San Qi / Notoginseng root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below carefully before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Tian San Qi / Notoginseng right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Notoginseng is low in acute toxicity as an herb, but it has a strong effect on blood clotting: it acts as an antiplatelet and anticoagulant, meaning it can slow clotting. Because of this: do NOT combine it with blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication such as warfarin or aspirin without medical supervision, as this can increase bleeding risk; do NOT use it before surgery (stop well in advance) or if you have a bleeding disorder; and do NOT use it during pregnancy or nursing. Excessive use may cause nausea, vomiting or nosebleed, so keep strictly to the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have any medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Tian San Qi (Panax Notoginseng) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
