Frequently Asked Questions about Tabasco Pepper Extract
What is Tabasco Pepper (Capsicum frutescens) fruit extract?
Tabasco Pepper is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Capsicum frutescens, a hot chili pepper of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, also known as bird pepper, malagueta or piri-piri. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Like all hot peppers, its fruit contains capsaicin, the pungent compound responsible for the heat. This matters for safety: capsaicin can irritate the stomach and mucous membranes, it interacts with several types of medication, and concentrated pepper extract is not for everyone. It is a different species from cayenne and chili (Capsicum annuum) and habanero (Capsicum chinense). Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Capsicum frutescens fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The fruit inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is tabasco pepper the same as cayenne, chili or habanero?
No - they are related hot peppers but different plants. Our tabasco pepper is Capsicum frutescens. Cayenne and chili are Capsicum annuum, and chipotle is a smoked form of that same species; habanero is Capsicum chinense. They are all in the pepper genus Capsicum and all contain capsaicin, but they are distinct species with different heat and flavor, and we list each one separately. One more note to avoid confusion: perilla (Perilla frutescens), which we also sell as Zi Su Ye and Zi Su Zi, only shares the species word "frutescens" - it is a completely different plant in the mint family and has nothing to do with chili peppers. We label ours clearly as Capsicum frutescens.
How do I use Tabasco Pepper liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is a small number of drops in 2 oz of water or juice, up to the amount on the label, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving - pepper extract is very pungent. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to plenty of water softens the heat. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and wash your hands after handling. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, out of reach of children.
Is Tabasco Pepper right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Digestive irritation: capsaicin, the hot compound in the fruit, can cause heartburn, stomach upset, burning and diarrhea, especially in concentrated form or larger amounts. Do NOT use it if you have an active stomach or duodenal ulcer, acid reflux (GERD), acute diarrhea, gallstones or severe high blood pressure. Medications: capsicum may slow blood clotting, so use caution if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet ("blood thinner") medicines; also use caution with medicines for blood pressure, heart rhythm, or diabetes, with MAOI antidepressants, and with ACE inhibitors, as it may affect how they work. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use amounts larger than normal food levels during pregnancy, and use caution while breastfeeding. Dose: do not exceed the suggested serving and keep to short-term use; very large doses have rarely been linked to effects on the liver, kidneys or blood pressure. Handling: avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
