Tranquil Sleep Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts: a pungent European root, a small daisy-like flower and the golden root of an arctic succulent. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product that causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae)
  • Chamomile, flower - Matricaria chamomilla flower (syn. Matricaria recutita; Asteraceae)
  • Rhodiola, root - Rhodiola rosea root (Crassulaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced cultivated botanicals (valerian from Poland, chamomile from Croatia, rhodiola from Canada). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Valerian root - the root and rhizome of a tall meadow plant of Europe and western Asia with clusters of pale pink flowers; the dried root has the strong, earthy smell that gives the plant its reputation, and it is the ingredient you will taste first.
  • Chamomile flower - the small white-and-yellow flower heads of German chamomile, an annual of the daisy family grown in Croatia and across central Europe, with the familiar apple-like scent of chamomile tea.
  • Rhodiola root - the thick, rose-scented root of a hardy succulent from arctic and mountain regions of Europe, Asia and North America; ours is cultivated in Canada. It has a different character from the other two herbs - see the safety note.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the earthy bitterness of valerian.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Use it in short courses rather than continuously, and if you have taken it daily for several weeks, taper off gradually rather than stopping suddenly. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Tranquil Sleep Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs. Our Sleep Support Alcohol-Free Drops is a different blend of valerian, hops, blue vervain and wild lettuce.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend causes drowsiness, and rhodiola interacts with mood medication. Please read before use.

  • Drowsiness: valerian and chamomile can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
  • Antidepressants and mood medication: rhodiola may interact with SSRI, SNRI and MAOI antidepressants and other psychiatric medicines, and has been linked to mania in people with bipolar disorder. Do not use with these medicines or conditions without your doctor.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with valerian products. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual fatigue.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
  • Blood thinners and transplant medicines: chamomile may interact with warfarin and cyclosporine - consult your doctor.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: chamomile has mild estrogen-like activity - consult your practitioner if you have a hormone-sensitive condition or take birth control pills.
  • Allergies: chamomile is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies.
  • Duration: use in short courses; stopping suddenly after weeks of daily valerian has caused withdrawal-type symptoms.
  • Rhodiola: can be mildly stimulating in some people - if the blend keeps you awake, discuss it with your practitioner.
  • Age: not for children or teenagers.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tranquil Sleep Alcohol-Free Drops?
Tranquil Sleep is a three-herb liquid blend: valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), chamomile flower (Matricaria chamomilla, also listed as Matricaria recutita) and rhodiola root (Rhodiola rosea), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Valerian is the pungent root of a tall European meadow plant, chamomile the small daisy-like flower of the German chamomile, and rhodiola the golden root of an arctic and alpine succulent; each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend causes drowsiness and is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the earthy bitterness of valerian, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Why is rhodiola in Tranquil Sleep? How is it different from Sleep Support?
Rhodiola, the golden root of the arctic, is a traditional companion to valerian and chamomile in this blend. It has a different character from the other two herbs: in some people it is mildly stimulating, so if the blend seems to keep you awake rather than settle you, discuss it with your practitioner. Sleep Support, our other blend, is a different formula of valerian, hops, blue vervain and wild lettuce with no rhodiola or chamomile. The chamomile here is German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla, the same species as Matricaria recutita), not Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). All three herbs are also available as single extracts.
How do I use Tranquil Sleep Drops?
