USPS Ground Advantage from Hawaii now travels by sea: what it means for free shipping
USPS Ground Advantage from Hawaii now travels by sea
Published November 5, 2026
This autumn the U.S. Postal Service changed how USPS Ground Advantage parcels travel between Hawaii and the mainland. They now move mostly by surface transportation, which from an island means by ship. Our free shipping on orders over $50 uses this service, so free delivery now takes noticeably longer than it used to.
In short:
- Free shipping is still free and tracked. It now takes about 2 to 4 weeks to most mainland addresses.
- Tracking may pause. While a parcel is at sea there are no scans, sometimes for a week or more. This is normal and does not mean the parcel is lost.
- Faster delivery is available at checkout. USPS Priority Mail and UPS arrive in 2 to 5 business days, FedEx 2Day in 2 business days.
What USPS says
In its 2026 holiday season release the Postal Service states that USPS Ground Advantage packages between the contiguous United States and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories "will have a 10-day or more service expectation", and that the number of days varies with distance. You can look up the expectation for your own ZIP Code with the USPS Service Commitments tool.
What we changed
Every shipping option at checkout now shows its estimated delivery date before you pay, so you can see the real difference between free and faster delivery. For orders over $50 we have also reduced the price of the faster options, so an upgrade costs much less than the full carrier rate.
Our advice
- Running low or ordering for a date: choose USPS Priority Mail, UPS or FedEx at checkout.
- Not in a hurry: free shipping works as before, just allow up to four weeks.
