Frequently Asked Questions about Watermelon Extract
What is Watermelon Seed (Citrullus lanatus) extract?
Watermelon seed extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried seeds of Citrullus lanatus, the watermelon, a trailing vine in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). The plant was historically classified under the name Cucurbita citrullus, but its accepted botanical name today is Citrullus lanatus. Our extract is made from the seed of the plant, not from the sweet red flesh of the fruit. It is prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material and offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product such as L-citrulline. Watermelon seeds themselves are also eaten as a roasted snack in many cultures, but this product is a concentrated liquid extract taken as drops rather than a food.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same wild-harvested Citrullus lanatus seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as citrulline, watermelon seed oil, or the edible seeds?
No to all three. This product is a whole liquid extract of the watermelon seed. It is different from L-citrulline, which is a single isolated amino acid sold as a standardized sports-nutrition ingredient - our extract preserves the seed's own natural spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating one compound. It is also different from watermelon seed oil, which is a cold-pressed oil (sometimes called ootanga or Kalahari oil) used mainly in skincare, and from the roasted watermelon seeds eaten as a snack. And it is made from the seed, not the red flesh of the watermelon fruit, so it is not the same as a watermelon fruit extract. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part - Citrullus lanatus, seed - so there is no confusion between these different watermelon products.
How do I use Watermelon Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Watermelon Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Watermelon seed is a common edible food with a high safety profile. As with any supplement, if you are pregnant or nursing, are taking medication, or have a known allergy to watermelon or other members of the gourd family, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
