This is an alcohol-based topical liquid extract (liniment-style) of the dried leaf of Gaultheria procumbens (wintergreen; Eastern teaberry / checkerberry, Ericaceae family). For external use only - applied to the skin, not taken internally.

This is a topical leaf EXTRACT - NOT concentrated wintergreen essential oil, and NOT for internal use. Like sweet birch (Betula lenta), wintergreen is a natural source of salicylates (methyl salicylate), which absorb through the skin. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - external use only, please read before use

Wintergreen contains salicylates (methyl salicylate) - the aspirin family - and they are absorbed through the skin. Use externally only and NEVER swallow this product. Do not confuse it with wintergreen essential oil (about 98% methyl salicylate), which can cause serious or fatal poisoning if swallowed.

  • Aspirin/salicylate allergy: do NOT use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin, salicylates or NSAID pain relievers.
  • Blood thinners: do NOT use with anticoagulants such as warfarin - even topical methyl salicylate can increase their effect and the risk of bleeding. Avoid before surgery.
  • Children and teenagers: do NOT apply to children or teens, especially with a viral illness - absorbed salicylates are linked to Reye''s syndrome.
  • Heat and occlusion: do NOT use with a heating pad, hot bath or sauna, or under a wrap/bandage - heat and occlusion greatly increase absorption and the risk of toxicity.
  • Skin: patch-test first; do NOT apply to broken or irritated skin, the eyes or mucous membranes. It may cause skin irritation - wash off if strong burning occurs.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use. Contains alcohol. Keep well out of reach of children.

What is Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) leaf extract?
Wintergreen is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Gaultheria procumbens, a low evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family, also known as Eastern teaberry or checkerberry. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the leaf's natural constituents, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. One very important point up front: wintergreen leaf naturally contains salicylates (methyl salicylate), the same chemical family as aspirin. This is a leaf extract, NOT concentrated wintergreen essential oil - the essential oil is about 98% methyl salicylate and is potentially dangerous, especially to children. Because of the salicylate content, several safety cautions apply (aspirin allergy, children, blood thinners, pregnancy) - please read them carefully below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gaultheria procumbens leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical, and the same salicylate safety notes apply to both. Please read them before use.
Is this the same as wintergreen essential oil? And how does it relate to birch?
No - and the difference matters for safety. This product is a liquid EXTRACT of the wintergreen LEAF, taken by the drop. It is NOT wintergreen essential oil. Wintergreen essential oil is about 98% methyl salicylate and is highly concentrated; swallowing even a small amount of the oil can cause serious salicylate poisoning, and it can be fatal to a young child - the oil should never be taken internally. Our leaf extract is far less concentrated, but it still contains salicylates, so the safety notes below apply. On birch: sweet birch (Betula lenta) yields an oil that is chemically almost identical to wintergreen oil (also methyl salicylate), so wintergreen and sweet birch belong to the same natural-salicylate group; we sell birch separately, and the same cautions apply.
How do I use Wintergreen leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
