Wild Lettuce & California Poppy Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts. The blend is named for its two ingredients; it is a traditional herbal product, not a capsule. Both herbs can cause drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.
- Wild lettuce herb - Lactuca virosa herb (Asteraceae)
- California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica flowering herb (Papaveraceae; not the opium poppy - contains no opiates)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Wild lettuce - a tall, bitter wild relative of garden lettuce, native to Europe. Its milky sap dries into lactucarium, nicknamed "lettuce opium" in nineteenth-century herbals; the nickname is folklore - it contains no opioid compounds.
- California poppy - the golden-orange state flower of California; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is not the opium poppy and contains no opium.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It may cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you, and do not combine it with alcohol. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as Wild Lettuce & California Poppy Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

- Drowsiness: do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, sleep medicines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
- Serving: do not exceed the label serving. Large amounts of wild lettuce have caused poisoning, with symptoms such as dry mouth, dilated pupils, dizziness, rapid heartbeat and difficulty urinating. If these occur, stop and seek medical advice.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Allergies: wild lettuce is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or chrysanthemums.
- Age: not for children.
