Aroma Resins Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of five aromatic tree resins extracted together in equal parts - the classic gum resins of Arabian, Indian, Southeast Asian and African tradition. It is a traditional herbal product taken by the drop in water. Several of these resins affect blood clotting and interact with medicines - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend
- Frankincense - the pale golden tears of resin tapped from Boswellia trees of the dry hills of India and the Horn of Africa; one of the oldest traded aromatics in the world.
- Myrrh - the reddish-brown, bitter resin of a thorny Commiphora shrub of Somalia and Arabia, companion to frankincense since antiquity.
- Guggul - the gum resin of the Indian bdellium tree, a close relative of myrrh, tapped in the dry lands of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- Dragon's blood - the deep red resin that coats the fruit of a climbing rattan palm of Sumatra and Borneo; it colors the extract red.
- Copal oro - dammar, the clear, brittle resin of a tall Indonesian rainforest tree, gathered from cultivated groves in Sumatra.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The five dried resins are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste. Because resins are only partly water-soluble, the glycerite may look cloudy or leave a little sediment; shake well before use.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the resins. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and reduce the amount if you notice stomach upset. Use it in short courses rather than continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract - the traditional way to dissolve resins, with the longest shelf life at room temperature - the same five-resin blend is available as Aroma Resins Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The resins and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Several of these resins affect blood clotting and interact with prescription medicines. Please read before use.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - myrrh, frankincense and guggul are all avoided in pregnancy, and myrrh can stimulate the uterus.
- Blood clotting: these resins act in both directions - frankincense may add to the effect of blood thinners, while myrrh and dragon's blood may reduce the effect of warfarin or promote clotting. Do not use with warfarin, aspirin or any other blood thinner without your doctor, and stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
- Prescription medicines: guggul and frankincense change how the liver processes many drugs, including statins, blood-pressure medicines, oral contraceptives and thyroid medication. If you take any prescription medication, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
- Thyroid: guggul can interfere with thyroid hormone - do not use if you have a thyroid condition or take levothyroxine without your doctor.
- Blood sugar: myrrh may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Fever and heart: myrrh may worsen a fever and, in large amounts, affect heart rate - do not use during a fever or if you have a heart condition without your doctor.
- Short courses: internal use of copal and dragon's blood is not well studied - keep to the label serving and to short courses, and reduce the amount if you notice stomach upset.
- Allergies: do not use if you are allergic to tree resins, Boswellia or Commiphora species.
- Age: not for children.
