Black Haw (Viburnum Prunifolium) is a large deciduous shrub or small tree with clusters of creamy white flowers followed by pink-rose berries, which birds love to eat. It belongs to the honey suckle family. Its distinctive bronze-green foliage on reddish purple stems turns blue-black in fall. Black Haw grows to 12 to 15 feet high and 8 to12 feet wide. It is native to North America and grows in moist woods, thickets, and along stream banks. Its red berries ripen in August, and gradually turn blue through the winter.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Black Haw Extract
What is Black Haw (Viburnum prunifolium) bark?
Black Haw is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to North America, botanically Viburnum prunifolium, in the Adoxaceae family. It is also known by folk names such as American sloe and stagbush. The part used here is the bark - traditionally the stem and root bark. This is a bark liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is worth clarifying up front that black haw is a close relative of, but a different plant from, cramp bark (Viburnum opulus); the two are often confused. It is also different from hawthorn (Crataegus), despite the shared word "haw." This is a whole-bark extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Viburnum prunifolium bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is black haw the same as cramp bark or hawthorn?
No, though the names cause confusion. Black haw is Viburnum prunifolium, and it is a close botanical relative of cramp bark, which is Viburnum opulus (also called guelder rose). The two are different species in the same genus and are often used similarly and even substituted for one another, so it helps to know that our product is specifically black haw, Viburnum prunifolium. Black haw is also sometimes nicknamed "American cramp bark," which adds to the mix-up. Separately, black haw is not the same as hawthorn (Crataegus), which is a different genus entirely - the shared word "haw" is just a coincidence of naming. It is also distinct from the ornamental viburnums grown in gardens. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Viburnum prunifolium) and plant part (bark) so there is no confusion with cramp bark, hawthorn, or the garden shrubs.
How do I use Black Haw liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Please read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Black Haw extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because black haw has a few important safety considerations. Black haw naturally contains salicin, an aspirin-like compound, so do not use it if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or salicylates, and use caution if you take blood-thinning medication. For the same reason, do not give black haw to children or teenagers, especially during or after a viral illness, because of the risk associated with salicylates in young people. Black haw also contains oxalates, so use caution if you have a history of oxalate kidney stones. Black haw has a long traditional association with the female reproductive system, and while it has historically been used in pregnancy, it should not be used during pregnancy without the direct supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner; it is best avoided while nursing as well unless directed. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not exceed the suggested serving. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Black Haw (Viburnum Prunifolium) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
