Liver Support Tincture - Milk Thistle, Dandelion Leaf, Turmeric, Schisandra, Oregon Grape and Licorice Herbal Blend

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of six herbs extracted together in equal parts. Liver Support is the name of the blend; it is a traditional bitters-style herbal product, not a capsule. It is meant for use in courses with breaks and is not suitable for everyone - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Milk thistle seed - the seed of a tall purple-flowered thistle of the daisy family, native to the Mediterranean.
  • Dandelion leaf - the young leaf of the common dandelion, a traditional bitter salad green of Europe.
  • Turmeric rhizome - the golden rhizome of Curcuma longa, the curry spice of South Asia; a strong yellow dye that can tint the drops.
  • Schisandra berry - the red "five-flavor berry" of a Chinese climbing vine, known in Chinese herbal tradition as Wu Wei Zi.
  • Oregon grape root - the yellow root of a Pacific Northwest shrub; its color comes from berberine.
  • Licorice root - the sweet root of European licorice, a classic ingredient of herbal bitters.

Why a tincture

The six dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method for bitters. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, bitter taste with the sweetness of licorice behind it, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Use it in courses with breaks rather than continuously, and do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same six-herb blend is available as Liver Support Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains six herbs, several of which carry important cautions. Please read before use.

  • Gallstones and bile ducts: dandelion, turmeric and Oregon grape increase bile flow. Do not use if you have a blocked bile duct or cholangitis. If you have gallstones or any gallbladder condition, use it only under the supervision of your doctor.
  • Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with turmeric and curcumin supplements, usually after one to four months of use. Stop and seek medical advice if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual tiredness or abdominal pain. Do not use this blend if you have liver disease unless your doctor agrees.
  • Medication: schisandra can raise blood levels of many medicines (including tacrolimus, cyclosporine and some statins); turmeric, milk thistle and Oregon grape can affect blood thinners such as warfarin; licorice and dandelion add to the effect of diuretics, digoxin and corticosteroids; Oregon grape may interact with diabetes medicines. If you take any prescription medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
  • Blood pressure and potassium (licorice): licorice can raise blood pressure and lower potassium with regular use. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease or low potassium.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Digestive: schisandra may worsen heartburn or ulcers; turmeric can reduce iron absorption.
  • Allergies: milk thistle and dandelion are daisy-family (Asteraceae) plants - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or chrysanthemums.
  • Use: in courses with breaks, not continuously. Stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. Not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Liver Support Tincture?
Liver Support is a six-herb liquid blend: milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum), dandelion leaf (Taraxacum officinale), turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), schisandra berry (Schisandra chinensis), Oregon grape root (Mahonia aquifolium) and licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. It is a traditional bitters-style herbal tincture, not a capsule. Each herb is also sold on its own; the blend combines them in equal parts. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below: this blend is not suitable for everyone and is meant for use in courses with breaks.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same six herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a sharper, bitter herbal taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What is each herb in the blend?
Milk thistle seed is the seed of Silybum marianum, a tall purple-flowered thistle of the daisy family, which naturally contains silymarin. Dandelion leaf is the young leaf of the common dandelion - the leaf, not the root - a traditional salad green. Turmeric is the golden rhizome of Curcuma longa, the familiar curry spice. Schisandra is the red five-flavor berry of a Chinese vine, Schisandra chinensis (Wu Wei Zi). Oregon grape root is the yellow root of a Pacific Northwest shrub, which naturally contains berberine. Licorice root is the sweet root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, which naturally contains glycyrrhizin. All six are sold individually on our site.
