Nut Grass (Cyperus Rotundus) is a grass-like, colonial, perennial herb in the Cyperaceae family. It can grow up to 140 cm in height, the stem is usually about 10-50 cm tall, vernicose and triangular in cross-section. The leaves are dark green and glossy. They are three-ranked and can be about 50 cm long and 5-12 cm broad. The flowers are bisexual, about 2-8” long, with 3 stamens. The rhizomes are fleshy and white at the beginning and become dark brown, nervate, wiry as they age. *

Nut Grass is a perennial sedge of the sedge family (Cyperaceae), botanically Cyperus rotundus. The part used here is the rhizome - the underground stem, sometimes called a tuber or nut. The plant carries many names: in traditional Chinese herbalism it is Xiang Fu, in Ayurveda it is Nagarmotha or Musta, and in English it is called nut grass, purple nutsedge, or coco grass. It is well known around the world as a persistent weed, but the rhizome is also a long-used traditional herb. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Cyperus rotundus rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the rhizome's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Is this the weed, and is it the same as nut grass oil?

Two useful clarifications. First, the weed: nut grass (also called nutsedge or purple nutsedge) is famous as one of the world's most troublesome lawn and agricultural weeds, and much of what people look up about it is how to get rid of it. Our product is different - it is the herbal rhizome extract of the same plant, made to be taken by the drop, and it is not a weed-control product. Second, the oil: cyperus, or nagarmotha, is also distilled into an essential oil (sometimes called nut grass oil) used in perfume and aromatherapy - our product is not that oil; it is a water-and-glycerin or alcohol liquid extract of the rhizome. The plant is also known as Xiang Fu and Musta. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Cyperus rotundus) and plant part (rhizome) so there is no confusion with the weed or with the essential oil.
