Frequently Asked Questions about Borututu Extract
What is Borututu (Cochlospermum angolense) extract?
Borututu is the common name for Cochlospermum angolense, a West-Central African tree of the family Bixaceae, also known as African Liver Root and Angolan Yellow Root. Its root has long been prepared as a traditional decoction (tea) in Angola and neighboring regions. This is a liquid extract of the dried root, offered here as an alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cochlospermum angolense root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits you. The root inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
What part is used, and what are the other names?
This extract is made from the dried ROOT of Cochlospermum angolense (the root, prepared traditionally as a decoction - not the bark). Common names include Borututu, African Liver Root, and Angolan Yellow Root; the accepted botanical name is Cochlospermum angolense (you may also see the spelling "angolensis"). A related African species, Cochlospermum tinctorium, is used similarly in West Africa but is a different plant, which we do not carry. We label this page clearly as Cochlospermum angolense root.
How is Borututu extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency; it is traditionally taken as a root tea. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Borututu safe? Safety information.
Borututu root has a long history as a traditional African herbal tea and testing has generally found it well tolerated. Pregnancy and nursing: its effects during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been well studied, so do not use it then except under a physician's advice. If you have a medical condition - especially a liver condition - or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
