Frequently Asked Questions about Pot Marigold Extract
What is Pot Marigold / Calendula (Calendula officinalis) flower extract?
Pot Marigold, better known as Calendula, is a bright yellow-and-orange flowering annual of the daisy or aster family (Asteraceae), botanically Calendula officinalis. It carries several common names, including pot marigold, English marigold, common marigold, Scotch marigold, and ruddles. The part used here is the flower. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. The flowers naturally contain carotenoids and flavonoids, which give them their vivid color. This is a whole-flower liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Calendula officinalis flower; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the flower's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is calendula the same as garden marigold, and is this a cream?
Two clarifications that clear up a lot of confusion. First, the name "marigold": our calendula is Calendula officinalis, the true pot marigold or English marigold. The bright marigolds most people grow in gardens are usually Tagetes (French marigold or African marigold), which belong to a different genus - so although both are called "marigold," they are different plants, and ours is specifically Calendula officinalis. Second, the form: calendula is widely used in skin creams, salves, and oils, but our product is not a cream - it is an oral liquid extract of the flower that you take by the drop. We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part (flower) so there is no confusion with garden marigold or with calendula skincare products.
How do I use Calendula liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Calendula extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Calendula is not right for everyone. Because it is in the daisy family (Asteraceae), people who are allergic to plants such as ragweed, daisies, marigolds, or chrysanthemums may also react to it, so use caution if you have these sensitivities. Do not use it during pregnancy, as calendula is traditionally avoided at that time. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
