Frequently Asked Questions about Chuan Xin Lian Extract
What is andrographis herb extract used for?
Andrographis herb extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried above-ground parts of Andrographis paniculata, an annual herb of the family Acanthaceae native to India and Sri Lanka and widely cultivated throughout South and Southeast Asia. The herb is characterized by a phytochemical profile dominated by diterpene lactones, primarily andrographolide - the principal constituent and the compound responsible for the plant's intense bitterness; neoandrographolide; 14-deoxyandrographolide; 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide; and bisandrographolide A. Additional constituents include polymethoxylated flavones (andrographidine A through F), xanthones, and phenolic acids including caffeic and chlorogenic acids. Andrographis paniculata has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is known as kalmegh, in Traditional Chinese Medicine under the name Chuan Xin Lian, and in Unani medicine. The plant is listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China and has been used in Indian and Southeast Asian traditional medicine systems for centuries. As a dietary supplement, andrographis herb extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between andrographis herb glycerite and tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers Andrographis Herb in two liquid formats. The Andrographis Herb Glycerite is an alcohol-free extract using 60% vegetable glycerin and 40% purified water as solvents, suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The Andrographis Herb Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction. Both formats are prepared from the same dried Andrographis paniculata herb using cold maceration at a 1:3 plant-to-solvent ratio. Both are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing for each batch.
What is the botanical background of Andrographis paniculata?
Andrographis paniculata is an annual herb of the family Acanthaceae - the acanthus family, whose ornamental leaf motif has been used in Corinthian column capitals in classical architecture since ancient Greece - native to India and Sri Lanka and widely cultivated throughout South and Southeast Asia. The genus name Andrographis derives from the Greek andros (man, male) and graphein (to write or draw), an allusion to the appearance of the stamen; the species epithet paniculata derives from the Latin panicula (panicle, a branching flower cluster), describing the plant's characteristic branched inflorescence. The Chinese name Chuan Xin Lian combines chuan (to pierce or penetrate), xin (heart), and lian (lotus), reflecting the plant's long prominence in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The English common name King of Bitters refers to andrographolide, the principal diterpene lactone of the species, which is among the most intensely bitter phytochemicals in the botanical world. The Ayurvedic name kalmegh derives from the Sanskrit kala (dark) and megha (cloud), meaning dark cloud - a reference to the plant's dense, dark-green foliage. In Indonesia the plant is known as sambiloto; in Malaysia as hempedu bumi, meaning bile of the earth, again referencing the extreme bitterness. The above-ground herb - stems, leaves, and flowers - is the plant part used in herbal preparations.
How do I use andrographis herb liquid extract?
Adults: take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, three times daily. Shake well before each use. Refrigerate after opening and use within 12 months of opening. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Are there any precautions for using andrographis herb extract?
The diterpene lactone andrographolide and related compounds in Andrographis paniculata may interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications including warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel; individuals taking any such therapy should consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Andrographolide may also interact with immunosuppressant medications; individuals taking immunosuppressants should not use this supplement without consulting a physician. Pregnant individuals should avoid use: andrographolide has been reported to have antifertility effects in animal studies, and the safety of Andrographis paniculata during pregnancy has not been established in humans. Nursing individuals should also avoid use. Individuals with known sensitivity to plants in the Acanthaceae family should use this supplement with caution. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are taking any prescription medication or managing a chronic health condition. Do not exceed the suggested serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
