Frequently Asked Questions about Spirulina Extract
What is Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis)?
Spirulina is a blue-green microalga - technically a cyanobacterium - botanically named Arthrospira platensis (and formerly called Spirulina platensis). It takes its popular name from its tiny spiral shape, and it gets its deep blue-green color from pigments including phycocyanin and chlorophyll. It is well known as a "green" food and is a source of protein. Our product is made from the whole dried algae and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-organism liquid extract that carries the algae's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Arthrospira platensis algae; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the algae's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
How is this different from spirulina powder, tablets, or chlorella?
A few useful distinctions. First, form: spirulina is most often sold as a powder or as pressed tablets. Our product is different - it is a liquid extract that you take by the drop, which some people find more convenient than powder or tablets. Second, spirulina versus chlorella: both are popular "green" microalgae, but they are different organisms - spirulina is a blue-green cyanobacterium (Arthrospira), while chlorella is a true green alga (Chlorophyta). They are often confused and are sometimes taken together, but ours here is specifically spirulina, and we offer chlorella as a separate product. Third, name and species: "spirulina" is the popular name, but botanically it is Arthrospira platensis (once classified as Spirulina platensis). We label our product clearly by botanical name so there is no confusion with the powder and tablet forms, with chlorella, or with the older naming.
How do I use Spirulina liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Spirulina extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Spirulina is not right for everyone. People with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU) should not use it, because spirulina contains phenylalanine. If you have an autoimmune condition or take medication that suppresses the immune system, talk with your practitioner before use. Because algae can take up substances from the water they grow in, it is wise to choose quality-tested sources. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
