Bael (Aegle marmelos) - Fruit, Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of the dried fruit of Aegle marmelos, an Ayurvedic tree of the Rutaceae (citrus) family, also known as Bengal quince, bilva or stone apple. The fruit has a long history in India both as a food (made into a drink, bael sharbat) and in Ayurvedic tradition.

  • Botanical name: Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa (bael, Bengal quince, bilva; Rutaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried fruit
  • Also known as: Bengal quince, bilva, stone apple, golden apple
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture (cold maceration in organic alcohol)
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Fruit responsibly sourced from India; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is the bael fruit (Aegle marmelos). In the strict sense it is different from "wood apple", a name often used for Limonia acidissima, a separate tree of the citrus family. It is also different from the bael leaf (bilva patra), which is used separately - this extract is the fruit. This is a concentrated extract, not the fresh fruit or drink. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Although bael is eaten as a fruit, this is a concentrated extract, so a few points matter.

  • Fertility / pregnancy: studies indicate bael can affect fertility - it has reduced measures of male fertility in research and may interfere with ovulation - so do NOT use it if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or nursing.
  • Blood sugar: bael may lower blood sugar - if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner.
  • Medication / conditions: if you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep to the suggested serving and keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bael Extract
What is Bael (Aegle marmelos) fruit extract?
Bael is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Aegle marmelos, an Ayurvedic tree of the Rutaceae (citrus) family, also known as Bengal quince, bilva or stone apple. The fruit has a long history in India both as a food (it is made into a drink, bael sharbat) and in Ayurvedic tradition. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from fruit responsibly sourced from India and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below - this is a concentrated extract, not the fresh fruit.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Bael fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the fruit, and is it the same as wood apple?
This product is made from the bael fruit. It is different from wood apple in the strict sense: the name wood apple is often used for Limonia acidissima, a separate tree of the same citrus family, whereas ours is Aegle marmelos (Bengal quince, bilva). It is also different from the bael leaf (bilva patra), which is used separately - this extract is the fruit. We label ours clearly as Aegle marmelos fruit.
How do I use Bael fruit liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is Bael right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Although bael is eaten as a fruit, this is a concentrated extract, so a few points matter. Studies indicate bael can affect fertility - it has reduced measures of male fertility in research and may interfere with ovulation - so do NOT use it if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or nursing. Bael may also lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep to the suggested serving and keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Bael (Aegle Marmelos) Fruit is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
