Balm of Gilead (Populus candicans) - Bud, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract
This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried leaf buds of the balsam poplar, sold in herbal commerce as Populus candicans (the accepted botanical name is Populus x jackii, a hybrid of the balsam poplar Populus balsamifera). The sticky, aromatic buds are the part used.
- Botanical name: Populus candicans (accepted: Populus x jackii; balsam poplar, Salicaceae)
- Plant part: Dried leaf buds
- Also known as: Balm of Gilead buds, balsam poplar, poplar bud
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
- Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Buds responsibly sourced from Croatia; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.
This poplar-bud Balm of Gilead is a different plant from the biblical or "true" Balm of Gilead (Commiphora gileadensis, a resin-bearing tree) and from the Balm of Gilead fir (Abies balsamea). It is also different from our White Poplar (Populus alba) - same genus, but a different species and a different part (the bark, not the buds). Please read the safety notes below.
Important safety information - please read before use
Poplar buds naturally contain salicylates (aspirin-like compounds) in their sticky resin, and are the natural source of bee propolis. A few cautions are important.
- Aspirin / salicylate sensitivity: do NOT use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or other salicylates.
- Children and teenagers: because of the salicylate content, do not give it to children or teenagers, especially during or after a viral illness (risk of Reye syndrome).
- Blood thinners: if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
- Propolis / balsam allergy: avoid this product if you are allergic to propolis or to balsam of Peru - it can cause skin or allergic reactions.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy; if nursing, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first.
- Keep to the suggested serving and keep out of reach of children.
