Frequently Asked Questions about Black Radish Extract
What is Black Radish (Raphanus sativus niger)?
Black radish is a winter variety of the common radish, botanically Raphanus sativus var. niger, in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). It has a dark, almost black skin and crisp white flesh, and is eaten as a root vegetable, especially in Central and Eastern European cooking. It is also known as Spanish black radish or black Spanish radish, and by the Unani name Muli Siyah. The part used here is the root. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. The root naturally contains glucosinolates and sulfur compounds. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Raphanus sativus niger root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is black radish the same as horseradish or regular radish?
No on both counts, and the distinction matters. First, black radish is not horseradish: horseradish is a completely different plant, Armoracia rusticana, in a different genus, even though both are in the mustard family. Our product is black radish, Raphanus sativus niger. Second, black radish is a specific variety of the common radish - the same species as the small red salad radish and the white daikon, but the dark-skinned winter type. It is also sometimes sold as fresh vegetable or as black radish juice; our product is different - it is a concentrated liquid extract of the root that you take by the drop. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Raphanus sativus niger), plant part (root) and format so there is no confusion with horseradish, with other radishes, or with the juice.
How do I use Black Radish liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Black Radish extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Black radish is a common food plant, but it is not right for everyone. If you have a gallbladder or bile-duct condition, such as gallstones or a blockage, talk with your healthcare provider before use. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
