Frequently Asked Questions about Bonducella Extract
What is Bonducella (Caesalpinia bonduc) seed extract?
Bonducella is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Caesalpinia bonduc - now often classified under the name Guilandina bonduc - a spiny shrub of the Fabaceae (legume) family. Its hard grey seeds are known as the fever nut, nicker bean or nicker nut, and in Ayurvedic tradition as Kuberakshi. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is bonducella (Caesalpinia/Guilandina bonduc), a different plant from Sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan, sold separately as Su Mu) and from the grey nicker (Caesalpinia crista) it is sometimes confused with; and this seed carries specific safety cautions - it is traditionally an abortifacient and may affect blood sugar - so please read the safety notes below. The name "fever nut" reflects an old folk association only, and we make no health claims for it.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Caesalpinia bonduc seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is bonducella the same as Sappanwood or grey nicker?
No - a few Caesalpinia plants are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Bonducella is Caesalpinia bonduc (now often written Guilandina bonduc), the fever nut or nicker bean, and the part is the seed. Sappanwood is a different species, Caesalpinia sappan (known in Chinese medicine as Su Mu), and the part used is the heartwood - we sell it separately. Bonducella is also sometimes confused with the grey nicker, Caesalpinia crista, another spiny seashore legume with grey seeds. You may also see bonducella under the older name Caesalpinia bonducella. We label ours clearly as bonducella (Caesalpinia/Guilandina bonduc), the seed, so it is not confused with Sappanwood or the grey nicker.
How do I use Bonducella liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because bonducella carries specific cautions (pregnancy and blood sugar), please read the safety information below before use and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Bonducella right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Bonducella has a long traditional history, but it carries some real cautions and has been little studied for long-term safety. Pregnancy and nursing: bonducella has traditionally been used as an abortifacient and for birth control and has anti-estrogen activity, so do NOT use it if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Blood sugar: it may lower blood sugar, so use caution and seek advice if you have diabetes or take insulin or other blood-sugar medicines, because of the risk of hypoglycemia. Limited data: long-term safety has not been well studied, so keep to modest, short-term use. Allergy: it is a legume (Fabaceae), so avoid it if you are sensitive to legumes. Serious conditions: do not use it to self-treat fever, malaria, diabetes or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Bonducella (Caesalpinia Bonduc) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
