Bonducella, Nicker Bean (Caesalpinia Bonduc) is a branched vine up to 15 m high, rarely a shrub or small tree, with trunk up to 5 cm in diameter. First-year-tree has shiny black bark, with curved spikes. The leaves are alternate, 25-80 cm long and up to 30 cm wide. The upper surface of the leaf blade is shiny; the bottom side is dark and matte. The flowers are bright yellow, fragrant, clustered in racemes 30-60 cm long. The beans are flat, oblong, densely covered with thorns.*

Bonducella carries a few real cautions and has been little studied for long-term safety.
- Pregnancy / nursing: bonducella has traditionally been used as an abortifacient and for birth control and has anti-estrogen activity - do NOT use it if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
- Blood sugar: it may lower blood sugar - use caution and seek advice if you have diabetes or take insulin or other blood-sugar medicines, because of the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Limited data: long-term safety has not been well studied - keep to modest, short-term use.
- Allergy: it is a legume (Fabaceae) - avoid it if you are sensitive to legumes.
- Contains alcohol. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
