Burr Reed (Sparganium emersum) - Rhizome, Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of the dried rhizome of Sparganium emersum, a bur-reed of the Typhaceae family. In traditional Chinese practice this rhizome is known as San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii); the pharmacopoeial source is the closely related Sparganium stoloniferum.

  • Botanical name: Sparganium emersum (bur-reed, Typhaceae); pharmacopoeial San Leng source Sparganium stoloniferum
  • Plant part: Dried rhizome
  • Also known as: San Leng, bur-reed rhizome, Rhizoma Sparganii
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture (cold maceration in organic alcohol)
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Rhizome responsibly sourced from India; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is Sparganium bur-reed (true San Leng) - a different plant from our separately listed San Leng (Scirpus fluviatilis), a river bulrush of the sedge family used as a traditional substitute (Jing San Leng), and from our Reed / Lu Gen (Phragmites communis), the common reed. Please read the safety notes below - this rhizome is not suitable for everyone.

Important safety information - please read before use

San Leng is a traditionally strong blood-moving rhizome with firm cautions. It is best used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

  • Pregnancy - do NOT use: it may stimulate the uterus, and animal studies have shown effects on fetal development.
  • Bleeding: do NOT use if you have a bleeding disorder or heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Blood thinners: if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Weakness / anaemia: traditionally avoided in people who are weak, anaemic, or without the pattern it is meant for.
  • Nursing / medication: if you are nursing or take any medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep to the suggested serving and keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Burr Reed Extract
What is Burr Reed (Sparganium emersum) rhizome extract?
Burr Reed is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Sparganium emersum, a bur-reed of the Typhaceae family. In traditional Chinese practice this rhizome is known as San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii); the pharmacopoeial source is closely related Sparganium stoloniferum. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from rhizome responsibly sourced from India and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below carefully - this rhizome is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same bur-reed rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as your San Leng or Reed products?
They are related but not the same. This Burr Reed is Sparganium emersum, the bur-reed rhizome that is the classic source of San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii). Our separately listed San Leng product is Scirpus fluviatilis (river bulrush, sometimes called Jing San Leng), a different plant of the sedge family used as a traditional substitute. And our Reed and Lu Gen products are Phragmites communis, the common reed - a completely different plant again. We label each clearly so they are not confused.
How do I use Burr Reed liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use - this is a traditionally strong rhizome best used under professional guidance.
