Frequently Asked Questions about Carob Extract
What is Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) seed and pod extract?
Carob is a liquid extract of the dried seeds and pods of Ceratonia siliqua, a Mediterranean legume of the Fabaceae family, also known as St John's bread or locust bean. The pods are the familiar caffeine-free chocolate substitute, and the seeds are the source of locust bean gum. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two naming points to avoid confusion: this is St John's BREAD (carob), which is NOT the same as St John's WORT (Hypericum perforatum, the mood herb) - a completely different plant; and "locust bean" here means carob, not the toxic black locust tree (Robinia) or honey locust (Gleditsia). It is also a whole-plant extract, not carob powder or locust bean gum. Carob is a legume and a known allergen, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ceratonia siliqua seeds and pods; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as carob powder, and is it St John's wort?
No on both. First, this is a liquid EXTRACT of the carob seeds and pods, taken by the drop - it is not carob powder (the cocoa-substitute flour) and it is not locust bean gum (the food thickener made from the seed); if you want those, they are separate food products. Second, and importantly: carob is called "St John's bread," but it is NOT St John's WORT. St John's wort is Hypericum perforatum, a completely different plant used for mood, with its own drug interactions - we sell that separately. The names are similar but the plants are not related. Ours is carob, Ceratonia siliqua.
How do I use Carob liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take medication, take it separately, as carob's natural fiber can affect absorption. Please read the safety and allergy information below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Carob right for everyone? Safety information.
Carob is a widely eaten food and is generally very safe, but a few cautions apply. The main one is allergy: carob is a legume (Fabaceae), so avoid it if you are allergic to carob or other legumes such as tamarind; carob pollen and bean flour can trigger asthma and hay fever in sensitive people, and those with a peanut allergy may cross-react to raw carob. Carob contains natural soluble fiber (locust bean gum), which can slow the absorption of medications and nutrients, so take it separately from any medicines. Use caution, and check with your practitioner, if you are pregnant or nursing, or have anemia, diabetes or infant reflux, as uncontrolled use may not be advisable in these situations. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
