What is Dill Weed (Anethum graveolens) extract?

Dill weed is a liquid extract of the dried leaf (foliage) of Anethum graveolens, the familiar culinary dill of the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. "Dill weed" is the standard name for the feathery green leaf, as distinct from dill seed. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is dill weed (Anethum graveolens), the leafy part, which is a different part from our Dill Seed (the same plant) and a different plant from celery (Apium graveolens) and rue (Ruta graveolens), which only share the Latin word "graveolens"; and although dill is an everyday food herb, a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use - it contains an aromatic oil (carvone) and should be avoided in pregnancy - so please read the safety notes below.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Anethum graveolens leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

Is dill weed the same as dill seed, celery or rue?

No - a few things are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Dill weed and dill seed come from the same plant, Anethum graveolens - dill weed is the feathery green leaf, and dill seed is the seed (richer in the aromatic oil carvone) - we offer them separately. Celery is a different plant, Apium graveolens, and rue is a different plant again, Ruta graveolens; these two only share the Latin epithet "graveolens" (meaning "strong-smelling") with dill - they are not the same. Rue in particular is a much stronger, potentially toxic plant and should not be confused with the gentle culinary dill. We label ours clearly as dill weed (Anethum graveolens), the leaf, so it is not confused with dill seed, celery or rue.

How do I use Dill Weed liquid extract?

Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than the dill used in cooking.
