Frequently Asked Questions about Eastern Red Cedar Extract
What is Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) chip extract, and how is it used?
Eastern red cedar is a liquid extract of the dried wood chip of Juniperus virginiana, an aromatic tree of the Cupressaceae family, also known as Virginia cedarwood, aromatic cedar or pencil cedar. Despite the name it is a juniper, not a true cedar. This product is for EXTERNAL (topical/aromatic) use only - it is not to be taken internally. This alcohol tincture is used externally, for example diluted as an aromatic wash or in external preparations. Two things are worth knowing: this is Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), a different plant from Western red cedar and "cedar" (Thuja plicata), from Thuja (Thuja occidentalis), from the true cedars (Cedrus) and from juniper berries (Juniperus communis), which we sell separately; and cedar wood contains thujone and is unsafe in pregnancy, so please read the external-use safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are external liquid extracts of the same Juniperus virginiana wood chip; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, which can dry the skin, so dilute it well. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, gentler on the skin. Both are for external use only - do not take either internally. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite for a gentler feel. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the external-use safety notes for both.
Is Eastern red cedar the same as Western red cedar, Thuja or true cedar?
No - the name "cedar" is shared by several very different trees, so it helps to be clear. Eastern red cedar is Juniperus virginiana, which is actually a juniper (family Cupressaceae), not a true cedar. Western red cedar - which we also sell simply as "Cedar" - is a different tree, Thuja plicata, and Thuja (or arborvitae) is Thuja occidentalis; both are in the Cupressaceae but a different genus from our Eastern red cedar. The true cedars are Cedrus (family Pinaceae), different again. And juniper berries come from other Juniperus species (Juniperus communis and Juniperus monosperma), which we sell separately as Juniper. All of these are aromatic conifers and several contain thujone, so they should be treated with care. We label ours clearly as Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Eastern Red Cedar extract externally?
This product is for external use only - do not swallow it. Shake well first, then dilute it in water before external use; because it contains alcohol, dilute it well so it does not dry the skin. Always patch test first: apply a small diluted amount to a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use. Avoid the eyes, mucous membranes and broken or irritated skin. Note that it may stain skin, clothing and fabric, so handle with care. Do not inhale it as a treatment or apply it in ways not intended for external botanical use. Please read the external-use safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Eastern Red Cedar safe? External-use safety information.
Please read this carefully. This product is for external (topical/aromatic) use only - do NOT take it internally. Thujone: cedar wood contains thujone, an aromatic compound that can be harmful if swallowed in quantity, which is one reason this product is external only. Pregnancy and nursing: Eastern red cedar is considered unsafe in pregnancy - it and related junipers have a reputation as uterine stimulants - so do NOT use it, even externally, if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Skin: patch test first and stop use if redness, itching or irritation occurs; do not apply to broken, irritated or sensitive skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Staining: it may stain skin, clothing and fabric. Do not use it on infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) Chip is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
