The Sacred water lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) or Pink Lotus has been used in the Orient as a medicinal herb for well over 1,500 years. It was brought to India from Egypt, where it was associated with the sun: the lotus, like the sun, opened in the morning and closed at night. It was also associated with the god Horus, who was often depicted sitting or standing on the lotus, like Brahma and the Buddha after him.

All parts of the plant are used, they are astringent, cardiotonic, febrifuge, hypotensive, resolvent, stomachic, styptic, tonic and vasodilator.

The leaf juice is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and is decocted with liquorice for the treatment of sunstroke.

A decoction of the flowers is used in the treatment of premature ejaculation. The flowers are recommended as a cardiac tonic.

A decoction of the floral receptacle is used in the treatment of abdominal cramps, bloody discharges. The Pink Lotus flower stalk is haemostatic. It is used in treating bleeding gastric ulcers, excessive menstruation, post-partum haemorrhage.

The stamens are used in treating urinary frequency, premature ejaculation, haemolysis, epistasis and uterine bleeding. A decoction of the Pink Lotus fruit is used in the treatment of agitation, fever, heart complaints.

The seed contains several medically active constituents, including alkaloids and flavonoids. It is hypotensive, sedative and vasodilator. The Pink Lotus seed has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and to relax the smooth muscle of the uterus. It is used in the treatment of poor digestion, enteritis, chronic diarrhoea, spermatorrhoea, leukorrhoea, insomnia, palpitations.

The plumule and radicle are used to treat thirst in high febrile disease, hypertension, insomnia and restlessness.

The Pink Lotus root is tonic. The root starch is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery etc, a paste is applied to ringworm and other skin ailments. It is also taken internally in the treatment of haemorrhages, excessive menstruation and nosebleeds.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pink Lotus Extract
What is Pink Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) root extract?
Pink lotus is a liquid extract of the dried root of Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred or pink lotus of the Nelumbonaceae family. Botanically the part is the rhizome - the familiar edible lotus root (renkon in Japanese, lian ou in Chinese) that is eaten as a starchy vegetable in soups and stir-fries across Asia. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is the true pink/sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), which is a completely different plant from blue lotus and Egyptian lily (both Nymphaea caerulea), the water lilies of a different family that we sell separately; and this is the root (rhizome), a different part from our lotus seed, plumule, stamen, leaf and flower. Lotus root is a well-loved food, but as a concentrated extract please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Nelumbo nucifera root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is pink lotus the same as blue lotus, or as the other lotus parts?
No - this is an important distinction. Pink lotus (also called sacred lotus) is Nelumbo nucifera, the true lotus. Blue lotus and Egyptian lily are the same plant as each other, Nymphaea caerulea - a water lily of a different family (Nymphaeaceae) that is used quite differently, so do not confuse the pink/sacred lotus with the blue water lily. Within the true lotus itself, different parts are sold separately: this product is the root (rhizome, the edible lotus root); we also offer the seed, the plumule (the green sprout inside the seed), the stamen, the leaf (He Ye) and the flower. Note too that the lotus rhizome is sometimes labeled "root" and sometimes "stem," because botanically it is a rhizome (a modified stem); they refer to the same organ. We label ours clearly as pink lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) root so it is not confused with blue lotus or with the other lotus parts.
How do I use Pink Lotus root liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Pink Lotus root right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Lotus root is a well-loved aquatic vegetable with a good food history, but a few sensible cautions apply to a concentrated extract. Sourcing: lotus grows in water and can take up heavy metals and, when eaten raw, may carry aquatic parasites, so a responsibly sourced, properly processed product matters. Not a substitute for medical care: if you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, a bleeding problem, or any serious symptom, do not self-treat - see a qualified doctor. Pregnancy and nursing: because a concentrated extract is stronger than the food, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Pink Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
