Sargassum Seaweed (Sargassum) - Algae, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried algae of Sargassum, a genus of brown seaweed in the family Sargassaceae (class Phaeophyceae). In traditional Chinese practice Sargassum is known as Hai Zao; the usual source species are Sargassum pallidum and Sargassum fusiforme.

  • Botanical name: Sargassum (Sargassaceae, Phaeophyceae; brown seaweed)
  • Part: Dried whole algae
  • Also known as: Hai Zao, gulfweed, sargasso
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Algae responsibly sourced; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is Sargassum (Hai Zao), a brown seaweed. Like Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) and Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum), it is high in iodine. It is different from Dulse (Palmaria palmata, a red seaweed) and from Spirulina (Arthrospira, a blue-green micro-organism, not a true seaweed). Because seaweed is naturally very high in iodine, please read the important safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Sargassum is very high in iodine. A few cautions are important.

  • Thyroid / iodine: too much or too little iodine can upset the thyroid gland - do NOT use it if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication without professional advice, do not give it to children, and do not use it for long periods.
  • Heavy metals / arsenic: sea brown seaweeds can take up heavy metals and inorganic arsenic from the ocean - use only a reputable, tested source.
  • Licorice: in traditional practice Sargassum should not be combined with Licorice (Gan Cao).
  • Blood thinners: seaweed can affect blood clotting - talk to your practitioner if you take a blood thinner.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sargassum seaweed Extract
What is Sargassum Seaweed (Sargassum) algae extract?
This is a liquid extract of the dried algae of Sargassum, a genus of brown seaweed in the family Sargassaceae (class Phaeophyceae). In traditional Chinese practice Sargassum is known as Hai Zao; the usual source species are Sargassum pallidum and Sargassum fusiforme. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from algae and prepared in the USA. Because seaweed is naturally very high in iodine, please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Sargassum algae; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract. The botanical inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
How is Sargassum different from bladderwrack, kelp, dulse or spirulina?
They are all sea plants but different species. Sargassum (Hai Zao) is our brown seaweed of the genus Sargassum. Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) and Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) are other brown seaweeds that, like Sargassum, are high in iodine, so the same iodine cautions apply to them. Dulse (Palmaria palmata) is a red seaweed, and Spirulina (Arthrospira) is not a true seaweed at all but a blue-green micro-organism. We label each by its botanical name.
How do I use Sargassum liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because of the iodine content, do not exceed the suggested serving and do not use it for long periods without professional guidance. Read the safety information below before use.
Is Sargassum right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Sargassum is very high in iodine. Too much or too little iodine can upset the thyroid gland, so do NOT use it if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication without professional advice, do not give it to children, and do not use it for long periods. Sea brown seaweeds can also take up heavy metals and inorganic arsenic from the ocean, so use only a reputable, tested source. In traditional practice Sargassum should not be combined with Licorice (Gan Cao). Because seaweed can affect blood clotting, talk to your practitioner if you take a blood thinner. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
