Frequently Asked Questions about Fang Feng Extract
What is Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata)?
Fang Feng is a perennial plant of the family Apiaceae, the carrot and parsley family, botanically Saposhnikovia divaricata, native to northern China, Mongolia and eastern Siberia. The part used is the dried root. It has a long history in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is known by the pinyin name Fang Feng; in older English herbal and trade sources it is called Siler, and the pharmacopoeia name for the root is Radix Saposhnikoviae. It was formerly placed in the genus Ledebouriella, so you may still see it listed that way. Our raw material is cultivated in China. The extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Saposhnikovia divaricata root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Why does Fang Feng have so many names?
Fang Feng travels under several names, which can be confusing, so here they are together. Fang Feng is the pinyin transliteration of its Chinese name and the one most used in traditional Chinese herbalism. Siler is an older English trade name for the same root, still seen in some herbal catalogs. Radix Saposhnikoviae is the pharmacopoeia name, radix simply meaning root. The accepted botanical name is Saposhnikovia divaricata; the plant was once classified in the genus Ledebouriella, so that older name still appears in some references. It is sometimes called divaricate saposhnikovia in English. All of these refer to the same plant - a member of the carrot family whose root is used. We label ours by the botanical name and plant part so it is clear which plant you are getting.
How do I use Fang Feng liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Fang Feng extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Fang Feng has a long history of traditional use and is regarded as low in toxicity. A couple of sensible precautions apply. Because it belongs to the Apiaceae, the carrot and parsley family, people who are allergic to related plants such as celery or carrot, or to birch or mugwort pollen, may wish to be cautious, as cross-reactivity is possible within this family. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and if you are nursing, take any medication, or are managing a health condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. This product is not intended for young children. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite should be kept refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
