Sha Yuan Zi (Astragalus Complanatus) is a perennial shrub in the Leguminosae family. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since ancient times. Astragalus Complanatus can grow up to 80 cm in height. It is covered with short bristles. The flat stems are accumbent. The taproot is long and thick. The green leaves are pinnately compound and alternately arranged. The leaf blades are ovate, about 6-14 mm long and 3-7 mm broad, with entire margin. The small flowers grow in clusters of 3 or 9; the green calyx is bell-shaped and has a 5-lobed tip; the yellow corolla is similar to a butterfly in shape. There are usually 10 stamens. The pod is spindle-like, about 3-4 cm long, covered with short black hairs, and with 20-30 kidney-shaped seeds inside.*
