Frequently Asked Questions about Soapnut Extract
What is Soapnut / Reetha (Sapindus mukorossi) nut extract?
Soapnut is a liquid extract of the dried nut (soapberry) of Sapindus mukorossi, a tree of the Sapindaceae family, widely known in India as reetha and in English as soapnut, washnut or soapberry. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is important to know that soapnut is best known as a natural soap: the fruit shell is rich in foaming compounds called saponins, and its main real-world use is external and household (washing hair, skin and even laundry). Any internal use is specialized and, in tradition, is done only under trained guidance in very small amounts, using a standardized extract rather than raw seeds. Please read the safety notes below before considering internal use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Sapindus mukorossi nut; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The nut inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is soapnut the same as shikakai?
No - they are two different plants that are often used together as natural cleansers, so it helps to be clear. Soapnut is Sapindus mukorossi (also called reetha or soapberry), and we use the nut (the dried fruit). Shikakai is a different plant, Acacia concinna (Senegalia rugata), and that product uses the whole pod. Both are rich in natural saponins and both have a long tradition as gentle washing agents in India, but they are separate species from different plant families. There are also other soapberry species such as Sapindus saponaria and Sapindus trifoliatus. We label ours clearly as soapnut / reetha (Sapindus mukorossi) nut so it is not confused with shikakai or the other soapberries.
How do I use Soapnut liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in 2 oz of water or juice. Because soapnut is rich in saponins, do not exceed the suggested serving - more is not better, and larger amounts can upset the stomach. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Keep it away from the eyes, and rinse with plain water if any is splashed in. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Soapnut right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Soapnut (reetha) is traditionally used mostly on the outside of the body and around the home (as a natural soap), and its internal use is specialized. Saponins: the nut is rich in natural saponins, which foam and, taken by mouth in larger amounts, can irritate the mouth and stomach and cause nausea or vomiting - and can be toxic in quantity, so keep strictly to the suggested serving and short-term use; more is not better. Raw seeds should not be eaten. Only a standardized extract, in small amounts, is appropriate internally, ideally under professional guidance. Eyes: keep it away from the eyes; if any gets in, rinse promptly with plain water. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
