Frequently Asked Questions about Speedwell Extract
What is Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) leaf extract?
Speedwell is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Veronica officinalis, a low, creeping plant of the Plantaginaceae family known as heath speedwell, common speedwell or gypsyweed. It has a long folk history in Europe, where it was once brewed as a herbal "European tea." This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is speedwell (Veronica officinalis), a different plant from Culver's root (Veronicastrum virginicum), which we sell separately, and from the many ornamental garden veronicas; and although it has a gentle traditional reputation, it has been little studied by modern science, so please read the safety notes below. Note also that speedwell raw material is sometimes adulterated with a related species, germander speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys), which is why a responsibly sourced product matters.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Veronica officinalis leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is speedwell the same as Culver's root or germander?
No - a few "veronica" and "germander" plants are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Speedwell is Veronica officinalis, the gentle heath speedwell. Culver's root is a related but different plant, Veronicastrum virginicum (once classified in Veronica), whose root is used quite differently and more strongly - we sell it separately. The many colorful garden "veronicas" are ornamentals. Two name traps are worth knowing: germander speedwell is Veronica chamaedrys, a separate speedwell species sometimes used to adulterate true speedwell; and it should not be confused with true germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), a different mint-family plant that has known liver-safety concerns. We label ours clearly as speedwell (Veronica officinalis), the leaf, so you know exactly which plant you have.
How do I use Speedwell liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to modest, short-term use since this herb is little studied. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Speedwell right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Speedwell has a gentle traditional reputation and no well-documented toxicity in reasonable amounts, but it has been little studied by modern science, so a cautious approach is sensible. Moderation: keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use. Pregnancy and nursing: because safety data are lacking, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Allergy: it is in the Plantaginaceae family, so avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Sourcing: speedwell is sometimes adulterated with a related species, so a responsibly sourced, tested product matters. Serious symptoms: do not use it to self-treat a cough, a liver problem, joint disease or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Speedwell (Veronica Officinalis) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
