Frequently Asked Questions about Sheep Sorrel Extract
What is Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) extract?
Sheep sorrel extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried aerial herb of Rumex acetosella, a small wild plant in the dock family (Polygonaceae) known for its sharp, sour taste. It is also called red sorrel, field sorrel, and sour weed. Our extract is made from the above-ground herb and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the herb's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Rumex acetosella, distinct from the culinary garden sorrel and from other plants that share the word sorrel.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rumex acetosella herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as garden sorrel or Jamaican sorrel?
No. Our product is sheep sorrel, Rumex acetosella, a small wild field plant. It is different from the culinary garden or common sorrel, Rumex acetosa, which is the larger leafy sorrel used in cooking and soups. It is also different from Jamaican sorrel, the deep-red drink made from roselle, which is Hibiscus sabdariffa - an entirely unrelated plant that simply shares the name sorrel. And it is not yellow dock, Rumex crispus, which is a related dock species sold as a separate product. Sheep sorrel is sometimes called red sorrel or field sorrel, and it has a long history as a wild, tangy edible green. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between sheep sorrel, garden sorrel, Jamaican sorrel, and yellow dock.
How do I use Sheep Sorrel liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Sheep Sorrel extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Sheep sorrel naturally contains oxalates (oxalic acid), like spinach and rhubarb, so it is best used in moderation and is best avoided by anyone prone to kidney stones or with a kidney condition, and by those with gout. It also naturally contains anthraquinone compounds, which is another reason to use it in moderation and not for prolonged periods. It is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Sheep Sorrel (Rumex Acetosella) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
