Frequently Asked Questions about Blessed Thistle Extract
What is Blessed Thistle Herb (Cnicus benedictus) extract?
Blessed thistle extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried aerial parts - the leaf, stem, and flower - of Cnicus benedictus (also written Carduus benedictus), a bitter plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is also known as holy thistle or St Benedict's thistle. Our extract is made from the herb and is offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name so it is clear this is Cnicus benedictus, distinct from other thistles - especially milk thistle.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cnicus benedictus herb; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is blessed thistle the same as milk thistle?
No - this is one of the most common mix-ups in herbalism. Blessed thistle is Cnicus benedictus (also called holy thistle or St Benedict's thistle), a bitter herb of the daisy family, and it is the plant in this product. Milk thistle is a completely different plant, Silybum marianum, best known as a liver herb and as the source of the compound silymarin. Despite the similar-sounding names - and the fact that "holy thistle" is sometimes loosely applied to milk thistle - the two are separate herbs with different traditional uses. Our product is specifically Cnicus benedictus, the blessed thistle. We label the product clearly by its botanical name so there is no confusion between blessed thistle, milk thistle, and other thistles.
How do I use Blessed Thistle liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Blessed thistle is very bitter, so diluting it in water or juice can make it easier to take.
Is Blessed Thistle extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Blessed thistle is in the daisy family (Asteraceae), so if you are allergic to plants such as ragweed, daisies, marigolds, or chrysanthemums, you may also react to it and should use caution. It is best avoided during pregnancy, as it has traditionally been avoided at that time. Because it is a strong bitter, taking much more than the suggested amount may cause nausea or stomach upset, so it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. If you are nursing, take any prescription medication, or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
