Bai Bu (Stemona Sessilifolia) Root Tincture

Both are liquid extracts of the same Stemona sessilifolia root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

"Stemonae Sessilifoliae" is the pharmacopeia phrase for the root of Stemona sessilifolia (Radix Stemonae); the accepted botanical name of the plant is simply Stemona sessilifolia. In traditional Chinese herbalism, Bai Bu can be prepared from three related Stemona species - Stemona sessilifolia, Stemona japonica and Stemona tuberosa - all of which are listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. This product is specifically Stemona sessilifolia, which we state by botanical name so there is no confusion about which plant it is. It is a member of the Stemonaceae family, a perennial of mountainous and bamboo-forest regions.

Shake well before use. Because this herb is traditionally considered slightly toxic, use small amounts: the suggested serving for adults is 10 to 20 drops in 2 oz of water, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, and it is best used short-term rather than continuously. It contains Stemona alkaloids, and in excessive amounts these can reduce the excitability of the respiratory center, which in overdose can lead to breathing difficulty; overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and headache. At sensible amounts it is considered safe, so the key is to use only small amounts, short-term, and to never exceed the suggested serving. Do NOT use during pregnancy or nursing.
