Bai Shao Yao (Paeonia Lactiflora) is species of herbaceous perennial of the Paeoniaceae family. Root system is fusiform, brown in color. The stems are bare, 60-100 cm or more in height. Flowers are 8-16 cm in diameter; the petals are white, pink, burgundy or red. Seeds are oval, black in color. Flowering period is in May - June. Fruiting season is in September.*

First, "white peony" is also a common name for a white tea (Bai Mu Dan) made from Camellia sinensis; that is a tea, an entirely different plant, and our product has nothing to do with it. Second, red peony root, known as Chi Shao, comes from peony species too but is processed differently and is considered a separate herb in traditional Chinese herbalism; our Bai Shao is the white peony root, not the red. Third, Paeonia lactiflora is famous as the ornamental Chinese peony grown for its large flowers; our extract is made from the root, not the flower or the garden plant sold for landscaping. The name Bai Shao (or Bai Shao Yao) specifically identifies the traditionally prepared white peony root.
