Frequently Asked Questions about Banaba Extract
What is Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) leaf extract?
Banaba is a tropical tree of the loosestrife family (Lythraceae), botanically Lagerstroemia speciosa, native to South and Southeast Asia and widely grown in the Philippines, India and Malaysia. In English it is called queen's crape myrtle or giant crape myrtle, and it also carries regional names such as Pride of India, jarul, pyinma, bungur and inthanin. The tree is known for its large clusters of pink and lilac flowers. The part used here is the leaf, which has a long history of use as a herbal tea in Southeast Asia. The leaf naturally contains corosolic acid and ellagitannins - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents; it is not an extract standardized to a set percentage of corosolic acid, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lagerstroemia speciosa leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the ornamental crape myrtle, and is it standardized corosolic acid?
No on both counts. First the plant: banaba is Lagerstroemia speciosa, a large tropical tree, whereas the crape myrtle usually planted in gardens and along streets is generally a different species, Lagerstroemia indica. They share a genus and the common name crape myrtle, but they are not the same plant, and this product is a leaf extract rather than a tree for planting. Second the form: much of the banaba supplement market sells extracts standardized to a stated percentage of corosolic acid, a constituent of the leaf. Ours is different - it is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents, with no standardization to a set corosolic acid figure, and it is not the isolated compound itself. One more note on names: crape myrtle has nothing to do with true myrtle (Myrtus communis), which is an unrelated plant in a different family that we sell separately. We label the botanical name (Lagerstroemia speciosa) and plant part (leaf) on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Banaba liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Banaba extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this section before using banaba. If you take medication for diabetes - insulin, metformin, a sulfonylurea or any other oral antidiabetic drug - talk with your doctor before using this product, and do not use it in place of treatment your doctor has prescribed; taking the two together may affect you more than either alone. For the same reason, discontinue at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Banaba (Lagerstroemia Speciosa) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
