Frequently Asked Questions about Bay Extract
What is Bay (Laurus nobilis) leaf extract?
Bay is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Laurus nobilis, the true bay laurel, an evergreen Mediterranean tree of the laurel family (Lauraceae). Its aromatic dried leaf is the familiar bay leaf used in cooking, and the plant is also called bay, sweet bay or simply laurel. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and unlike a whole bay leaf it is a liquid you take by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced in Turkey and each batch is gluten free.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Laurus nobilis leaf; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as California bay or sweet bay magnolia?
No - it helps to be precise here because several plants are loosely called "bay." Our product is true bay laurel, Laurus nobilis, the Mediterranean culinary bay of the laurel family. California bay, or California laurel, is a different tree, Umbellularia californica (also called Oregon myrtle, pepperwood or the "headache tree"); it looks similar and is sometimes used in cooking, but it is much more pungent and is not what we sell. The name "sweet bay" is also confusing because it is used both for Laurus nobilis and for a completely unrelated ornamental tree, sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana). To avoid any mix-up we label our product by its botanical name, Laurus nobilis, and describe it as true bay laurel - the culinary bay leaf plant - not California bay and not magnolia. If you want the classic Mediterranean bay leaf, this is the right one.
How do I use Bay leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. It has a warm, aromatic bay flavor. Unlike a whole bay leaf, this is a liquid, so there is nothing to remove or swallow. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Bay leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Bay leaf is a common food spice and is generally recognized as safe in food amounts, but a concentrated liquid extract should be kept to food-level amounts and not taken above the suggested serving. One point to know: bay leaf may lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication, use caution and speak with your practitioner, as your blood sugar could go too low; it may also add to the effect of blood-thinning medication. Use medicinal amounts cautiously during pregnancy and stop before scheduled surgery. Do not use if you are allergic to bay or other laurel-family plants. Note that whole bay leaves are stiff and can be a choking or digestive-tract hazard if swallowed - this is a liquid extract, so that does not apply, but keep whole culinary leaves away from young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label.
