Frequently Asked Questions about Beth Root Extract
What is Beth Root (Trillium erectum) root extract?
Beth Root is a liquid extract of the dried root of Trillium erectum, a low-growing woodland plant of the family Melanthiaceae native to eastern North America. The plant is known by many common names, including birthroot, wake robin, red trillium, purple trillium, Indian Balm and Stinking Benjamin, and "Beth Root" itself is a worn-down form of the older folk name birthroot. In spring it produces a single deep-red three-petaled flower above a whorl of three leaves, which is how the genus Trillium got its name. This alcohol-free version is a concentrated liquid extract made from the dried root using vegetable glycerin and water. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced in the USA.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Trillium erectum root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild, slightly sweet taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is Beth Root the same as the trillium wildflower in gardens?
It is the same genus but a different context. The word "trillium" on its own usually brings up the ornamental woodland wildflower that gardeners and hikers prize - Trillium is a protected native plant in many places, and much of the interest in "trillium," "red trillium," "wake robin" and "purple trillium" is about identifying or growing the plant, not about a supplement. Our product is specifically the herbal liquid extract of Trillium erectum root, sold under its traditional herbal name Beth Root (birthroot). Because Trillium is slow-growing and sensitive - it can take several years to flower and is considered at-risk in parts of its range - we source our raw material responsibly rather than by wild digging, and we encourage customers who love the wildflower to leave wild plants undisturbed. So when you see "Beth Root" or "Trillium erectum" here, that is the herbal root extract; "trillium" in a gardening or plant-identification context refers to the living ornamental plant.
How do I use Beth Root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Beth Root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Beth Root should be used conservatively. Do not use it if you are pregnant, as the plant has a long association with the female reproductive system and its root contains steroidal saponins that may have hormonal effects; if you are nursing or trying to conceive, avoid it or speak with a qualified practitioner first. Because those saponins can be irritating in large amounts, stay within the suggested serving and do not take more. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
