What is Blackberry Leaf (Rubus fruticosus) extract?
Blackberry is a thorny shrub of the rose family (Rosaceae), botanically Rubus fruticosus, the common bramble of hedgerows and wild margins across Europe and beyond. Most people know it for its berries, but the part used here is the dried leaf, not the fruit and not the root. The leaf is naturally rich in tannins, along with flavonoids and vitamin C - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Blackberry leaf has a long history of use as a herbal tea. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that this is the leaf of Rubus fruticosus; we sell blackberry root separately, and it is a different plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rubus fruticosus leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the berry, and how is it different from raspberry leaf or blackberry root?
Three quick clarifications, because the blackberry family is easy to mix up. First, the part: this is the blackberry leaf, not the berry. It is not blackberry fruit, blackberry juice or a berry supplement - it is a liquid extract of the dried leaf. Second, our own range: we also sell blackberry root as a separate product; it is the root rather than the leaf, so if you want the root, look for that item rather than this one. Third, the neighbours: raspberry leaf is a different plant, Rubus idaeus, and red raspberry leaf in particular is its own well known herb - we sell raspberry separately, and it is not the same as blackberry leaf. There is also Fu Pen Zi, the Chinese raspberry (Rubus chingii), which is a fruit from yet another species. All of these belong to the genus Rubus, but they are different species or different plant parts and are not interchangeable. We label the botanical name (Rubus fruticosus) and plant part (leaf) on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Blackberry Leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Blackberry Leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Blackberry leaf is generally well tolerated, but it is not right for everyone. The leaf is rich in tannins, and a concentrated liquid extract is more concentrated than a cup of leaf tea, so taking more than the suggested serving may cause stomach upset or nausea. Tannins can also reduce the absorption of iron and some other minerals, so if you take an iron supplement or a mineral-rich meal, it is sensible to separate them from this extract by an hour or two. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
