Bone Advance Alcohol-Free Drops
Bone Advance Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Lemongrass, Barberry, Garlic, Dandelion Root, Chamomile, ThymeBone Advance Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of six herbs extracted together: three kitchen and garden herbs - lemongrass, garlic and thyme - with the yellow root of the barberry shrub, the bitter taproot of the dandelion and the apple-scented flowers of German chamomile. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - barberry interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy - please read the safety information below before use.
- Lemongrass - Cymbopogon citratus (Poaceae)
- Barberry, root - Berberis vulgaris root (Berberidaceae) - contains berberine
- Garlic, bulb - Allium sativum bulb (Amaryllidaceae)
- Dandelion, root - Taraxacum officinale root (Asteraceae) - the root, not the leaf
- Chamomile, flower - Matricaria recutita flower (Asteraceae; German chamomile)
- Thyme, leaf - Thymus vulgaris leaf (Lamiaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Lemongrass - the tall, lemon-scented tropical grass of Southeast Asian cooking; the fibrous stalk and leaf base are used.
- Barberry root - the bright yellow root of a thorny European hedgerow shrub; the color comes from berberine, the same alkaloid found in goldenseal and Oregon grape.
- Garlic bulb - the familiar kitchen bulb, cultivated for at least five thousand years.
- Dandelion root - the long, bitter taproot of the common meadow dandelion, dug in autumn; the leaf is a separate preparation.
- Chamomile flower - the small daisy-like flower heads of German chamomile, with their apple-like scent; a different plant from Roman chamomile.
- Thyme leaf - the small grey-green leaves of the low aromatic shrub of Mediterranean hillsides, the same plant as the kitchen herb.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The six dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, garlicky note of the blend.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use for short periods only - berberine-containing herbs are traditionally taken for two to three weeks at a time, not continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same six-herb blend is available as Bone Advance Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Barberry interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy; garlic affects blood clotting. Please read before use.
- Prescription medicines: berberine in barberry blocks the liver enzymes that process many drugs (CYP3A4, CYP2D6 and P-glycoprotein) and can raise the levels of warfarin, statins, cyclosporine and other medicines. Ask your pharmacist before combining this blend with any prescription medicine. Garlic can lower the levels of HIV protease inhibitors such as saquinavir.
- Bleeding and surgery: garlic, chamomile and thyme can slow blood clotting. Do not combine with blood thinners or aspirin without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Pregnancy, nursing and infants: do not use. Berberine can cause or worsen jaundice in newborns, and lemongrass and thyme are unsuitable in pregnancy.
- Lithium and diuretics: dandelion root is a diuretic and can raise lithium levels. Do not combine with lithium, and use caution with diuretics.
- Gallstones: do not use if you have gallstones or a blocked bile duct.
- Allergies: dandelion and chamomile are daisy-family (Asteraceae) plants. Avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies. Thyme is a mint-family plant, and lemongrass can cause skin sensitivity.
- Blood pressure and blood sugar: barberry and garlic can lower both. Use caution with related medication.
- G6PD deficiency: do not use.
- Sedatives: chamomile may add to their effect.
- Age and duration: not for children. Use for short periods only.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
