Frequently Asked Questions about Cistanche Extract
What is Cistanche (Cistanche deserticola)?
Cistanche is an unusual plant of the family Orobanchaceae, the broomrape family, botanically Cistanche deserticola. It is a parasitic plant that grows in the deserts of Mongolia and northern China: it has no chlorophyll of its own and instead attaches to the roots of desert shrubs, drawing water and nutrients from them, sending up a thick fleshy stem. That fleshy stem is the part used, and it is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Rou Cong Rong; it is sometimes nicknamed desert ginseng, although it is not a ginseng and is not related to Panax. Our raw material is sourced in Mongolia. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-stem liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. One point worth noting: there is more than one cistanche - ours is Cistanche deserticola, distinct from Cistanche tubulosa, another species sold under the same common name. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cistanche deserticola; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the plant's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this desert ginseng, and is it the same as Cistanche tubulosa?
Two useful clarifications. First, desert ginseng: that is only a nickname for cistanche, earned from its use as a general tonic in the desert regions where it grows. Cistanche is not a ginseng and is not related to Panax ginseng - it is a parasitic plant of the broomrape family (Orobanchaceae), a completely different lineage. Second, the species: there is more than one cistanche in trade. Ours is Cistanche deserticola. Another species, Cistanche tubulosa, is also sold under the common name cistanche, and while the two are related and used similarly in tradition, they are different species. We label our product as Cistanche deserticola, and note its traditional Chinese name Rou Cong Rong, so that it is clear exactly which plant you are buying. It is a whole-stem liquid extract of the plant, not an isolated compound.
How do I use Cistanche liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Cistanche extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this before use. Cistanche has mild laxative properties, so use caution if you are prone to diarrhea or loose stools, and be aware that larger amounts may cause nausea or digestive upset - a further reason not to exceed the suggested serving. Modern safety data on cistanche is limited, so a conservative approach is sensible. Do not use this product during pregnancy or while nursing. It is not intended for young children. If you take any medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
