Frequently Asked Questions about Cumin Extract
What is Cumin Seed (Cuminum cyminum) extract?
Cumin seed extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried seed of Cuminum cyminum, a small herbaceous plant in the carrot family (Apiaceae). Its seed is a familiar spice known around the world as cumin, kammun, jeera, and comino. Our extract is made specifically from the seed and is offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material grown in Turkey. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the seed of true cumin, Cuminum cyminum, distinct from the culinary spice blends and from other plants that share the name cumin.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cuminum cyminum seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as black cumin, or the cooking spice?
It is true cumin, but a different product from the kitchen spice, and it is not black cumin. Our product is Cuminum cyminum, sometimes called white cumin, the seed used as the familiar cumin spice. It should not be confused with black cumin, which despite the name is a completely different and unrelated plant, Nigella sativa - also called black seed or kalonji - sold as its own separate supplement. Our product is also different from the cooking spice itself: it is a concentrated liquid extract of the seed prepared as a dietary supplement, rather than the ground spice used in recipes. And it is not caraway (Carum carvi), a look-alike seed, or fennel. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between true cumin seed extract, black cumin, the culinary spice, and caraway.
How do I use Cumin Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The alcohol-free glycerite and the tincture are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Cumin Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Cumin is widely used as a food spice and this extract is generally well tolerated. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. It is best avoided in larger-than-food amounts during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. If you have a known allergy to plants in the carrot family (such as celery, caraway, or coriander), it is best to be cautious. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
