Guan Zhong (Dryopteris Crassirhizoma) Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract, Dried Rhizome

Expertly prepared ALCOHOL-FREE liquid extract from the dried rhizome of Dryopteris crassirhizoma, the fern known in Chinese herbal tradition as Guan Zhong (more precisely Mian Ma Guan Zhong), and in older Western herbals as male fern rhizome. This product is also labeled Cyrtomium, but botanically Cyrtomium is a different fern genus; our material is Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and we print that botanical name so the identity is clear.

  • Main ingredient: Guan Zhong (Dryopteris crassirhizoma) dried rhizome. Origin: Russia.
  • Menstruum: vegetable glycerin, crystal clear water.
  • ALCOHOL FREE. GLUTEN FREE.
  • The rhizome naturally contains phloroglucinol compounds and other plant constituents - named here only as facts of the raw material.
  • Concentrated liquid extract, taken by the drop.

Botanical Identity

Dryopteris crassirhizoma is a fern of the Dryopteridaceae family. The part used is the rhizome. "Guan Zhong" is a traditional name that has been applied to the rhizomes of fifty or more different fern species; the Chinese Pharmacopoeia recognizes Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Mian Ma Guan Zhong) as an official source. It is a different plant from the ornamental "holly fern" (Cyrtomium fortunei), from the region called Guanzhong in China, and, while related, from the male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas).

Frequently Asked Questions about Cyrtomium Extract
What is Guan Zhong (Dryopteris crassirhizoma) rhizome extract?
This is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Dryopteris crassirhizoma, a fern known in Chinese herbal tradition as Guan Zhong, and more precisely as Mian Ma Guan Zhong; in older Western herbals the same plant group is called male fern rhizome. Our material is sourced from Russia. A note on naming: "Guan Zhong" is a traditional name that has historically been applied to the rhizomes of many different, unrelated ferns, but the Chinese Pharmacopoeia recognizes Dryopteris crassirhizoma as an official source. This product is sometimes also labeled "Cyrtomium," but botanically Cyrtomium is a different fern genus; our material is Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and we show that botanical name so the identity is clear. The rhizome naturally contains phloroglucinol compounds along with other plant constituents; these are simply components of the raw material. We offer the extract in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Dryopteris crassirhizoma rhizome; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both are taken by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. With either form, see the safety notes below - this is a herb to use only under professional guidance.
Is this Cyrtomium, or Dryopteris - and why does it matter?
The botanical identity is Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and that is what matters. The name "Guan Zhong" has one of the most tangled histories in herbal medicine - it has been applied to the rhizomes of fifty or more different fern species across many plant families. Among those, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia recognizes Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Mian Ma Guan Zhong) as an official source, while Cyrtomium fortunei (the ornamental "holly fern") is a different genus and a documented substitute. This product carries the "Cyrtomium" label as a legacy name, but the material is Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and we print that botanical name on the page. It is also not the same as the region called Guanzhong in China, and while it is closely related to the male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) of Western herbals, correct botanical identification of ferns in this group is important because different species differ in chemistry and in how they should be handled.
How is Guan Zhong extract used, and how much?
Shake well before use. The traditional suggested amount is 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, and it should be used only as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, including the note about not taking this herb with fatty or oily food.
Safety: who should not use Guan Zhong, and how to store it.
This is a potent traditional herb and should be used only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner; it is not intended for self-treatment. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. Do not give it to children, and keep it out of their reach. Do not take it together with fatty or oily food, or with oils or fats, because these can increase the absorption of certain naturally occurring compounds in the rhizome. Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you are taking any medication or have any medical condition, consult your physician before use, and do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
