What is Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)?
Cardamom is one of the world's most prized culinary spices, sometimes called the "queen of spices," botanically Elettaria cardamomum, in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The part used here is the seed - the small, intensely aromatic seeds found inside the green pods. This is a whole-seed liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. Cardamom's warm, sweet, slightly citrusy aroma comes from its natural essential oils. It is worth knowing that this is green, or "true," cardamom, which is different from black cardamom (a different plant), and that our product is the seed extract, not the whole pods or the essential oil. This is a whole-seed extract that carries the spice's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Elettaria cardamomum seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the spice's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is this green cardamom, black cardamom, or the essential oil?
Good question, because the name covers a few things. Our product is green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, also called true cardamom - the familiar sweet, aromatic spice used in curries, chai, coffee, and baking. It is different from black cardamom (Amomum subulatum), a larger, smoky-flavored spice from a different plant, and it is also different from grains of paradise (Aframomum), another relative in the ginger family. As for form, our product is a liquid extract of the whole seed, taken by the drop - not the whole cardamom pods you cook with, not ground cardamom, and not cardamom essential oil, which is a concentrated aromatic product. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Elettaria cardamomum) and plant part (seed) so there is no confusion with black cardamom, the pods, or the oil.
How do I use Cardamom liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Cardamom extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Cardamom is a widely used culinary spice and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated extract has a few considerations. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract, since culinary spices are sometimes used more cautiously in medicinal amounts during pregnancy. Traditionally, cardamom is used with caution by people who have gallstones, so speak with your practitioner first if that applies to you.
