Frequently Asked Questions about Sea Buckthorn Extract
What is Sea Buckthorn Berry (Hippophae rhamnoides) extract?
Sea buckthorn is a thorny deciduous shrub of the oleaster family (Elaeagnaceae), botanically Hippophae rhamnoides, native across Europe and Asia and known for its clusters of bright orange berries. It is also called seaberry or sallowthorn, Shaji in Chinese herbal tradition and oblepikha in Russian. The part used here is the berry. The berry naturally contains vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids and characteristic fatty acids including omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-berry liquid extract taken by the drop, not the pressed sea buckthorn oil and not the juice, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Importantly, despite the shared word, sea buckthorn is a completely different plant from common buckthorn.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hippophae rhamnoides berry; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the berry's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is sea buckthorn the same as buckthorn, and is this the oil?
No on both counts, and the first one matters. Sea buckthorn is Hippophae rhamnoides, an edible orange berry in the family Elaeagnaceae. Common buckthorn is a completely different plant - Frangula alnus, in the family Rhamnaceae - and it is a laxative bark, in the same group as cascara (Rhamnus purshiana). We sell buckthorn and cascara as their own separate products, and they have nothing to do with this berry beyond the shared word "buckthorn". So if you are looking at sea buckthorn, you are looking at the food berry, not the laxative bark. Second, the form: sea buckthorn is widely sold as a pressed oil for cosmetic use and as a juice; our product is neither of those - it is a liquid extract of the dried berry that you take by the drop. We label the botanical name (Hippophae rhamnoides) and plant part (berry) on every page so there is no confusion between the berry, the bark, the oil and the juice.
How do I use Sea Buckthorn Berry liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Sea Buckthorn Berry extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Sea buckthorn berry is well tolerated as a food, but a concentrated liquid extract is more concentrated than the fresh berry, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
